Lets go all the way back to 2006, well before I moved to Knoxville, Tennessee….thats the earliest thought I can remember about photography. Imagine this introverted high school junior sitting in a high school english classroom listening to their teacher discuss her summer school photography class. That would be me, the quiet kid in the corner trying to avoid teacher eye contact. Up until this moment, I never even had a thought about photography. Never had an interest in the craft of documenting stories and milestones for others. I was a quiet kid, so why would I want to interact with others, let alone take their pictures. That means I would have to to talk to them!
Well little did I know, that after listening to my English Teacher discuss her photography class, I would actually be interested. Immediately after class I went purchased my first camera: a Cannon point and shoot with a digital zoom. Top of the line then, or so I thought.
The excitement on my face about buying a new camera could not be contained. I photographed everything and everyone that I could, thinking I knew so much about photography (mind you I have yet to even attend the summer school photography class). I quickly realized that I had so much to learn and decided to enroll in the summer school photography class my English teacher was offering. The decision to take this course was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I did not know at the time that this course would be the catalyst for my passion for photography.
Fast forward another year, my senior year in high School (Class of 2007 represent!). I made the decision to enroll in the photography summer class yet again. I wanted to learn more and more about photography. Plus, what does one do after they graduate high school? Attend summer school, right? Enrolling in the course that summer allowed me to not only keep learning about photography but also work alongside talented high school senior photographer, Chris Rout. Chris is the main photographer and owner of Mr. Foto in Scottsburg, Indiana. His passion for photography and knowledge about lighting is incredible. That summer my photography teacher had arranged for Chris to teach a few lessons for us about natural light photography at his studio. It was this moment in this summer course and learning from Chris that I knew what I wanted to do one day in life. I wanted my own studio. I wanted to capture moments for others. I wanted to be a professional photographer.
From there, life happened. That summer quickly came and went and I was starting my college career. (I went to Johnson University here in Knoxville, Tennessee). Photography was still an interest and a passion, but never a reality I thought was possible. Throughout those years, I photographed off and on, shot some senior pictures, shot a few weddings, and captured some family photos for friends of mine. I never really gave thought to me actually starting a photography business. Well, fast forward to November of 2015. I was shooting a family session at the Knoxville Botanical Gardens and it was the spark I needed to pursue photography as a business.
A few months later….
In April of 2016, I was shooting an engagement session at Melton Hill Park in Oak Ridge, Tennessee. It was here that I met Brittany Conner with Brittany Conner Photography. It was just a chance meeting, as I was photographing in a spot she was waiting to go down and photograph herself with her engaged couple. From that meeting, she reached out to me and we became friends as she encouraged me to pursue my dream of really launching my photography business. From then on, my business has absolutely taken off! I have been able to participate in The Pink Bride Bridal Show in August and become a part of the Bride Link which has helped us connect and grow in ways we couldn’t even imagine.
It always been a dream of mine to really offer my clients an experience because anyone can take pictures. I really want to build relationships with my clients that are long lasting and really give them a photography experience that they wont forget. I don’t want to just meet them at a random coffee house (even though, trust me, I love coffee). I have always wanted to be able to take it even further and be able to offer them something truly special. A few weeks ago, I had an opportunity present itself that would allow me to do just that…and it was an opportunity I just couldn’t pass up! It was the opportunity that I vividly remember wanting in high school. It was a chance to have my own studio space.
(Side note: I am actually on the phone talking to a fellow Knoxville Photographer, Brittany Sidwell, in the above photo!)
Well….I am beyond excited to announce that Matthew Davidson Photography now has a studio. Let me say it one more time…..MATTHEW DAVIDSON PHOTOGRAPHY NOW HAS A STUDIO!
